silence again

This morning was unlike the previous ten:
the children didn’t waken me again
with startling whooping cries that cauterized my eyes
and made me wish for what and don’t know when.

The two year old would run around the house
enough to make a sainted statue grouse
the rhythm of his steps could give me the dyspep
and make me hide behind my loving spouse.

The six year old was certainly aloof
I let him watch my TV, like a goof:
the large high definition for days and days was his’n
and if I tried to watch he’d raise the roof.

Now, I don’t want you all to think I’m lazy
and if you think the details kind of hazy
I’ll have you all know this: I’m really going to miss
those kids: this empty silence makes me crazy.

anonymous

I knew the two pots of perriwinkle—
narrow suspicious leaves, shy purple blossoms—
but the rest of the greenhouse specimens
were really strangers to me; I didn’t know a mauve
one from a red
one, nor a geranium from a mum one

I just carry the ones
she indicates from the table to the cart
to the quick count at the cash register
to our trunk to the back porch
to await interment
much as the winter dead await
their day, a shipping label distinguishing
the distinguished dead
the label fluttering in the sunny May breeze
as the relatives gather
relatively close to the memory
of that hard day last winter so far
so long been good to know you

Don’t know these flowers
by name just by potential
to real gardeners they are old friends
but to me they are anonymous

lawn at dawn

Framed by our kitchen window
he would ride his garden tractor
around his yard next door
cut the grass in casual swoops
around the tree
along the wire link fence
monotonous passes
smiling at some thought
contained within
the white sound of the tractor.

This spring someone else
cut the silent lawn
and in the morning
our kitchen window
paints a green sun dappled
emptiness.
