Groan

The difference between groan and green
aside from the obvious vowel displacement
is that instead of inspecting my lawn
this Spring morning for hints of green
I am going to have to shovel through
a fresh foolish foot of frosty flakes to find it.

The Sixth

So Spring rain droops into the bar
proposes like a drunken miner
in love for a quickie
then drags off to a night in jail
after a swaying fight in the alley
leaving behind his soggy butts
his piss, his handful of change
in the blood on the tabletop
and tells you not to cry:
he’ll be back.

The Fifth

South (so soft, that word)
of the river, the fifth
is a bottle of consolation

North (so hard that R)
today sun scatters
blue shadows on banks of snow
that ended the fifth
sad excuse for Spring

oh, we groan
under this white wait
no, endure
this fifth disappoint
meant to be flowers

This fifth we wish
we could drink
but cannot.

Bottom’s up!
