How many springs

How many springs
this winter do you think we’ve had?
Endless ends to winter
drive a poet mad.

Was there really
a robin nesting yesterday?
Somebody said
he saw it, but it flew away.

When does the edge
of winter really leave the air?
Just when you think
it’s springtime, snow is everywhere.

I saw a crocus
pressing through the melting snow.
Next thing you know
the windchill’s twenty-five below.

How many springs
descend before it breaks your heart?
How many thaws
and freezes ’til hope falls apart?

Somebody said
that summer’s somewhere else this year.
All I can say
is springtime’d better hurry here.

How many springs
this winter do you think we’ve had?
Endless ends to winter
drive a poet mad.

fun with muscles

She ran into the room
in a panic worse than mine
because I was screaming
or hollering at least
the way husbands will
when they have lopped off a limb
or the quarterback drops the ball
in the end zone

this time the TV was off
and I had all my limbs
but one of them was in
the most intense cramp
in a place I would not
stretch out for relief
every move made it worse

Two hours shoveling heavy snow
in the driveway costs more
than you’d think
and we’re at the stage of life
where I bundle up to go shoveling
with a certain possibility
of finality to it
my parka may be
a symbolic suit of lights.

As for the cramp
it went away
as for me
I’m exhausted
as for my wife
she wants me
to hire some young buck
so we can watch him shovel
through the window
while we hold hands
it could happen

Tilting at snowfall (revised)

Snow soon howls down
wind carved broken moon
sky cowled Queen glares

rise knight lash armour tight
cinch throaty drains with wool
gather lungs bellowed arsenal

chant valedictory oaths of joy
venture eye spitting cold
mount white walls adamantine

launch wide blade imperial
charge screaming battlements
stagger royal triumphant

[I posted yesterday’s original in the Wild Poetry Forum in the BIOFEEDBACK stream, and received some interesting critiques, which led to this revision. There will probably be more revisions.]
