blue water breathes

Meditation on a Row of Pines

If I were to choose a background
for our family photo
that crusty old stand of knobby knees
wouldn’t be it.

I’d put us in front of a graceful row
of Tuscan cypress
by an ancient marble fountain
wouldn’t I

Well, a stately receding row
of ancient oaks
with mown lawns and a pond of swans
would —

Those pines were old fifty years ago
dark, scarred, leaned by the wry west wind.
We stand on their sienna needles and cones.
Would you take the picture now, please?

Traffic

In the rearview mirror
receding montage of children
standing at the intersection
waiting for yellow buses

I weep leaving them behind
but they soon pass me
in their own cars
some wave
some do not

Several cars later
I see them on the road
kids, groceries, pets
in the back seat
some wave
some drive faster

Some drive in wrecks
some walk, bike
some are chauffeured
some never appear

I focus on the road
glance at the rearview
some are still standing
at the intersection
shiny and smiling
as before
