Her SUV sits
fully across the sidewalk
she is engrossed
talking to her ear
chewing the mouthpiece
facing the street
wrong way in a one way
as I approach on foot
Should I risk injury
in front of her
or behind her
Perhaps I should
fall on my knees
and worship
one so exhalted
as to grant herself
this pride of place
Prudence rules
I stop and wait for her
to commit
She turns toward me
sees me idly
and proceeds
into traffic
chewing her plastic cud
heading for the barn
