Monarch Butterflies

The butterflies are gathering
In the trees at this end of our island
Within view of the U.S.A.
They are flapping their deep orange
Wings, revving, preparing to cross
Into U.S. airspace.
Do I, as a loyal Canuck
Report this potentially subversive
Run for the Mexican border
To somebody official? Say,
The butterfly inspector or
The inspector of U.S. borders
and unsanctioned flights?
Is this something Emelia Earhardt or
John Kennedy Jr or Glen Miller or Buddy Holly
Should hear about?
Meanwhile, they are panting
In some treetops out back,
Like trembling dark leaves,
Quivering, waiting for dawn.
