{"id":99,"date":"2006-04-02T22:22:29","date_gmt":"2006-04-03T03:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=99"},"modified":"2006-04-03T17:54:16","modified_gmt":"2006-04-03T22:54:16","slug":"watching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/04\/02\/watching\/","title":{"rendered":"Watching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Driving isolates us from one another<br \/>\nwindows up, I watch the cinema of the road<br \/>\nof the street of the passing fields<br \/>\nin some cars are reciprocatory<br \/>\nin others are actors in dramas<!--more--><br \/>\nof which I see only vignettes.<\/p>\n<p>The woman with the bruise:<br \/>\nis that the mark of a cupboard door<br \/>\nor a fist<br \/>\nThe man with the crutches:<br \/>\nwas he in an accident<br \/>\nor surgery<br \/>\nThe young woman in bloom:<br \/>\nwill she realize in time that<br \/>\nthis is her day<\/p>\n<p>I follow the eye back into the<br \/>\nswelling blood vessels, the contusion<br \/>\ncaused by an incident with her<br \/>\nfoot slipping and stopping her bathroom door<br \/>\nin the path of her eyebrow \u2014 ouch!<\/p>\n<p>I follow the crutches back to the<br \/>\nhospital, the setting room, the impact<br \/>\nin the car against the concrete abutment \u2014 crunch!<\/p>\n<p>I know the young woman will spend<br \/>\nthe rest of her life too late<br \/>\ntrying to catch that look<br \/>\nthe one brief flash of<br \/>\ntotal perfection that happened today<br \/>\nwhile I was the only one watching.
