Sitting drinking
\nliquid iodine solution
\nevery half hour
\nwriting verse and scanning
\nstale magazines
\nmakes me think of
\nthe state of the plastic floor
\nand the echo of
\nvoices and utensils
\nin the hospital cafeteria
\ndown the hall
\nand whether my body
\nlike our garden is sprouting
\nsome new growth
\nsome scattered seed
\nbrought in by the wind
\nsome new thing that slept
\nunder the leprous snow
\nwhile we were celebrating
\nyear’s end darkness.<\/p>\n
And if there is something
\nsome cell mutating
\ngorging on my insides again
\nand if they can
\ncut it away again
\nor burn it out
\nwhat will be the purpose
\nof all this intricate machinery
\nthis terror, angst and dread?<\/p>\n
If we sick are heroically
\nsnatched from the jaws
\nthe very claws of a
\ndandelion infestation
\nto go home and watch TV
\nmaybe we shouldn’t be.<\/p>\n
