{"id":973,"date":"2008-06-15T22:02:15","date_gmt":"2008-06-16T02:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=973"},"modified":"2009-09-12T23:32:25","modified_gmt":"2009-09-13T03:32:25","slug":"dock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2008\/06\/15\/dock\/","title":{"rendered":"Dock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you live on a small island<br \/>\nyou need a boat and two docks:<br \/>\none here and one for those<br \/>\nreluctant trips ashore.<\/p>\n<p>For years our island dock<br \/>\nwas a narrow nervous thread<br \/>\nof plywood on pipes.<\/p>\n<p>Finally upper management<br \/>\ndeclared she was tired of<br \/>\nwalking the plank to reach<br \/>\nthe boat, or inversely,<br \/>\nthe shore.<\/p>\n<p>Consultations, planning sessions<br \/>\nby telephone and spiraling<br \/>\nprotests later, a contract was awarded<br \/>\nand I commenced construction<br \/>\nof a huge L-shaped deck<br \/>\nover the water, and although<br \/>\nplans for the dock-end boutique<br \/>\nwere shelved, it was, as they say<br \/>\nsatisfactory.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the winter&#8217;s ice in the river<br \/>\ncould take a structure that size<br \/>\nfor a spring vacation near Montreal.<br \/>\nThat means we have to take the dock out<br \/>\nevery September and erect it<br \/>\nevery June.<\/p>\n<p>If the term<br \/>\nmoving heaven and earth<br \/>\nmeans anything<br \/>\nit may refer to<br \/>\nupping and downing<br \/>\nthat dock.<\/p>\n<p>The first time we did it,<br \/>\nthere were six of us.<br \/>\nThe last two times<br \/>\nthere were one and a half<br \/>\n(one being one of my sons,<br \/>\nthe half being yours truly.)<\/p>\n<p>We did it again today<br \/>\nFathers&#8217; day<br \/>\n(or in the local family vernacular,<br \/>\n&#8220;Wonderful Sons Day&#8221;)<br \/>\nand I must say<br \/>\nwe get slicker<br \/>\nand more wonderful<br \/>\nevery time.<\/p>\n<p>Amen.<\/p>\n<p>[print_link]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you live on a small island you need a boat and two docks: one here and one for those reluctant trips ashore.
