{"id":96,"date":"2006-04-05T17:00:36","date_gmt":"2006-04-05T22:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/04\/05\/sitting-by-the-river-eh\/"},"modified":"2007-03-07T10:11:43","modified_gmt":"2007-03-07T15:11:43","slug":"sitting-by-the-river-eh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/04\/05\/sitting-by-the-river-eh\/","title":{"rendered":"Sitting by the river, eh?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Wordsworth it was daffodils<br \/>\nremembered in the tranquility of distancing time<br \/>\n\u2014 years ago, this poet came to loathe that pretty poesy:<br \/>\nfor him it somewhat paradoxically represented<br \/>\nthe effete transcendance of spoiled poets<br \/>\nwho had descended to the nadir of na\u00efvt\u00e9<br \/>\nwho sold the powerful voice of poetry into<br \/>\nenslavement to prettiness and dismissable silliness.<br \/>\nYet paradoxically (again) he has written<br \/>\nvolumes of verses prior to blogging<br \/>\nverses which focus on the<br \/>\nbeauty tranquility and majesty<br \/>\nanyone can find just sitting by the river<br \/>\nthat runs by the end of this street<br \/>\nwhere he lives and in the summer<br \/>\nwithin a few feet of his cottage.<\/p>\n<p>Writing here for an audience (thus far) from<br \/>\nAsia, Australia, Europe and North America<br \/>\nhas made the poet aware that<br \/>\nhis soft little songs<br \/>\nabout lovely evenings and contentment<br \/>\nand peace and nice neighborhoods<br \/>\nand woods and the river and sunshine<br \/>\nwould be more than a little out of touch<br \/>\nfor many of his readers.<\/p>\n<p>He has come to feel apologetic as if some<em><br \/>\napologia provita sua <\/em>were necessary as if<br \/>\nhe were obligated stop writing about his beloved river<br \/>\nto get street-dirty and<br \/>\nclaw it up and shout it out,<br \/>\nbecause even using the subjunctive mood<br \/>\nin this poem made him feel too genteel<br \/>\ntoo na\u00efve \u2014 guilty of happiness.<\/p>\n<p>So he resolved to write about<br \/>\nissues that bring out the tissues<br \/>\nwhenever he could<br \/>\nSo with that end in mind<br \/>\n<em> and Blake&#8217;s &#8220;London&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nhe thought to take a look at<br \/>\nthe slimy underbelly<br \/>\nof Canadian small city life.<\/p>\n<p>Should he write about the Inquiry into &#8220;Project Truth&#8221;<br \/>\nwhich is meeting in Cornwall to<br \/>\nconsider the truth in allegations that<br \/>\na ring of priests and professionals in<br \/>\nCornwall may have been absolved unjustly of<br \/>\nyears of child abuse<br \/>\nor that the taumatized victims are going to<br \/>\nbe shut out of testifying?
