Since that early autumn 911call
\nmy wealthy neighbours have changed.
\nWe used to share hedge trimming
\nsometimes get together for barbecue
\nand we were even planning a trip
\nto Mexico together
\nbut that crash changed everything.<\/p>\n
We haven’t exchanged two words
\nover the fence lately
\nand I have seen them looking
\nthrough the blinds from their darkened rooms.<\/p>\n
Their son is studying martial arts:
\nI have seen him kicking and whirling in the back yard
\nand there was talk of some brutal bar fights
\nin which people of a certain race were
\nsent to the hospital.<\/p>\n
I was talking to her
\nand was surprised to hear
\nshe a was proud of her son’s venture.
\nShe used to be a pacifist,
\nvowed her son would never go to war;
\nshe told me they now attend services at
\nthe Divine Sect of the Martyr’s Blood
\nright downtown on Wall Street.<\/p>\n
She had the newspaper delivery kid
\narrested on some trumped up charge
\nand he had to spend a night in jail
\nwith a bunch of drunks
\nbecause she disagreed with
\nhis uncle’s politics.<\/p>\n
I sort of don’t like what they are doing,
\nbut they own the company I work for
\nand they do go to church every Sunday.<\/p>\n
