We’re pretty pleased in mid-May by our lilacs:
\nthe one is mauve, the other gentle red;
\nand both of them have grown and put forth blossoms
\nand sweet perfume we savor from our bed.<\/p>\n
And next block east an apple tree is blooming
\na gorgeous pink that augurs well for fall:
\nand everywhere the gardens are reacting
\nto sun and showers and urgings from us all.<\/p>\n
But yesterday while walking in this splendor
\nI saw a tree that made it all look pale:
\na lilac in full bloom that was filling all the room
\nin a garden yard that wore it like a veil;<\/p>\n
Its single trunk a sturdy ancient carving
\na twisted marvel, green and purple royal:
\nlovely, ancient, breathing sweetness on the street
\nlike a kitchen baking riches, from the soil.<\/p>\n
And so the reach of time our lilacs’ stature
\npaints more sweet Mays in others’ floral future.<\/p>\n
