In the twenty-four seconds
\nit takes for the red to green
\nchemical exhaust wafts subtly
\nover the pavement and sidewalks
\ninvades the neighborhood
\nexplores yards and gardens and lungs
\nsettles in to work its mayhem
\na gift from waiting motorists
\nwho also entertain window glass
\nwith the resounding bass thump
\nof their offerings to the stratosphere.<\/p>\n
Perhaps we should reciprocate
\nwith similar garbage and defecation
\nheap our effuse on their heads
\nstuff their lungs with poison
\nfill their chassis with fearsome silence
\nand the promise of more to come.<\/p>\n
Once I charged a car that sped
\ndown our child-speckled street:
\nI slammed my palms against the side
\nhard enough to startle and sway the car
\nas I was no small hunter facing elephants
\nbut a giant scaring mice
\nwhich fled never to return.<\/p>\n
