A handful of husbands
\nwere scattered through the maze
\nof ladies playing bridge
\nin the church hall yesterday.
\nA plate of sandwiches
\nswathed in clear plastic
\nwaited on each table along with
\npickles and some jelly beans.<\/p>\n
There were some rolled
\nbanana and peanut butter
\nand some cream cheese
\negg salad, salmon salad, ham,
\nand something like a cross
\nbetween salmon and ham.<\/p>\n
But I thought of my mother:
\nhow they all wore hats
\nand the sandwiches were
\nall white bread or pink of blue
\ncrusts were trimmed
\nand no man would darken the door.<\/p>\n
It was a day out
\naway from the washing machine
\nwith its thumping plungers and
\nthreatening rollers to watch
\nand bluing for the whites
\nand starch and ironing and
\ndusting and scrubbing and
\ndelicate gloves for cracked red hands.<\/p>\n
