In the silence of our rooms and halls
\nwhen all the grandchildren are gone
\nI contemplate the paintings on the walls
\nand see our lives and loves are drawn
\nin those ordered panels and on glass
\nof coffee tables where little hands and fingers
\nleft their tiny welcome marks in passing
\nrecord of the visit’s joy that lingers
\neven though we hold a fist of spray
\nthat will soon enough remove all traces
\nof the gleeful exploration and display
\nthat paints indelible the smiling faces
\nof our grandsons in their pride of place
