Naked
\nexcept for a piece of tape over my wedding ring
\na becoming easy-access hospital gown in green pastel
\na fetching plastic hair cover
\na rough hospital sheet
\nand my sense of humour
\nI lounge outside the O.R.
\non the stretcher
\nthoughtfully provided by the hospital administration.<\/p>\n
The conversation down the hall
\nis about vegetable gardens:
\nslugs seem to be taking over the lettuce;
\nashes are recommended as a non-toxic remedy
\nas well as beer in a saucer.
\nI could use a beer about now,
\nand a hefty sandwich of any variety would do nicely.<\/p>\n
My side by side ceiling inspectors on this occasion are
\na nervous elderly lady who sighs
\nand a silent young woman who seems to be praying
\nI can hardly wait to engage the green pastel smothered
\nO.R. staff in clever banter and witty repart\u00e9e<\/p>\n
Soon it will be my pleasure to hop into the wide stirrups
\nand hang my gonads and meat
\nfor the casual scrutiny of said pastel muffled ladies of the O.R.
\nand take a nap.<\/p>\n
Finally, it is my turn
\nto be wheeled into the on-deck position
\nparallel to the wall of the O.R.
\nabove me is a white board
\nwith several scrawled notices of staff meetings
\nand recent memos
\nin a prominent uneven rectangle
\nthe following catches my eye
\nand becomes part of my history:<\/p>\n
