Everyone said noted how well Thelma
\ntook it when Daddy died;
\nshe stood at the head of the line
\nand cracked very wise.
\nShe shook every hand
\nand patted the weepers
\nand kept both her eyes that dry.
\n“She’s a brick,” they all said,
\n“a stone wall.”<\/p>\n
A month later I saw her
\nat the grocery store.
\nI hadn’t seen her there

\nShe was chatty as ever.
