August sun has baked the summer soil:
\nmoss and lichens, clover and moonscape
\nstare entranced underfoot.<\/p>\n
Hoppers patrol the slope down to the river
\nwatching for monsters or other vacationers
\ngone with the latter boats across the water
\nand up the long road away.<\/p>\n
We bear boxes of bedding, tools, extra memories
\ndown to the boat to stow with the cool knowledge
\nof coming storms, snow and thaws and cobwebs,
