I saw this evening
\nin my driveway
\nan oldish man
\nhefting a garbage can
\nout to the curb.<\/p>\n
He wore a natural wool
\ncable-knit sweater
\nkhakis, tan socks and slippers.<\/p>\n
Even though it was
\nthe first day of false spring,
\nthe sky was dark
\nthe air was nippy, cold.<\/p>\n
\u201cStop,\u201d I wanted to tell him;
\n\u201cHold off!\u201d But I could not.<\/p>\n
There was an authority to
\nthe way he hefted first the can
\nthen the recycle bin
\nthat spoke of the dignity of work
\nnobility of achievement.<\/p>\n
I saw glory streaming around his head
\nI saw victory
\nI saw a man living life
\nin a way that suited the moment
\nvery well.<\/p>\n
Besides, if I\u2019d started yelling
\n\u201cStop!\u201d out in the driveway
\nby myself, carrying my garbage can,
\npeople would have thought
\nI was old
