“D” puzzled me, almost
\nright from the start:
\nI was delighted when I discovered
\n“D” started my name and was therefore
\nmine;
\nbut I was confused
\nthat it seemed to be
\na relative of “B”
\nwho was nowhere in my name at all,
\nand more — confused
\nis not the right word —
\nintrigued
\nto discover that
\nthe small print version
\nof “D” was backwards:
\n“d” \u2014 it curved the opposite way.<\/p>\n
It was like a nasty little secret
\nsort of a black sheep in the family.<\/p>\n
I think it might have been that
\nthat made me a contrarian:
\nand from then on,
\nI found myself
\nat first secretly
\nbut later on publically
\non the opposite side
\nin just about everything.<\/p>\n
Everybody played hockey
\nin our town;
\nI hated hockey
\nand on my own became a skier.
\nNo matter what popular opinion was
\nI always looked for another way to see the issue.<\/p>\n
That’s a good way to become a loner, by the way
\nbut like Hester Prynne
\nmy “D” has become sort of emblazoned by it.
\nMaybe that’s how characters are formed
\nat least, in my case.<\/p>\n
