Usually during the toast and jam
\nsection of breakfast, after the entr\u00e9 \u2014
\nporridge or whole grain cereal \u2014
\nwe discover who died.<\/p>\n
I am reading the comics,
\nsometimes the editorials
\nand letters to the editor \u2014
\noften directly from heaven
\nit would seem \u2014
\noffering a complete diet of
\nall forms of humour,
\nwhich I find a necessary
\naspect of bundling up
\nmy carcass for such adventures
\nas the day may bring.<\/p>\n
But usually, my attention is drawn
\nfrom across the table
\nto the thinning ranks
\nof the pre-boomer
\n(pre-WW2) generation,
\nwhich is dropping like
\nflies into a very attractive
\nmanure pile.<\/p>\n
Oh, look: old sandy-arse died;
\nI thought he’d shuffled off
\nten, fifteen years ago.<\/p>\n
There is a difference
\nI think
\nbetween dying
\nand being physically dead.
\nI am hoping to live long
\nbefore and after
\nmy physical death.
\nAt least, that’s what
\nthose who weep and wail
\nat funerals tell me,
\nand I am religious
\nin that belief.<\/p>\n
The religious folk
\nwho are self-proclaimed experts
\non how wonderful death is
\nseem to be very weepy
\nwhen it actually happens.
\nIs it jealousy or perhaps
\nuncertainty that so
\ninflames their eyes?<\/p>\n
