For many northerners
\nwhom those of us who actually
\nlive in the north like to call
\nsnowbirds,
\nthe palm tree is more familiar
\nin winter
\nthan the pine.<\/p>\n
The palm tree has one characteristic
\nthat the pine does not:
\nthe ability to bend immediately
\nin a heavy wind.<\/p>\n
A pine tree would never survive
\na tropical hurricane;
\nof course, a palm tree
\nwould never survive northern ice.<\/p>\n
It’s all a matter of swaying
\nin the wind
\nor standing up
\nto the cold.<\/p>\n
I’d rather stand than sway
\nbut then that’s what makes
\nme a northerner
\nand certain politicians
