{"id":482,"date":"2007-02-15T06:21:18","date_gmt":"2007-02-15T11:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2007\/02\/15\/shovelling-out\/"},"modified":"2007-03-06T11:26:05","modified_gmt":"2007-03-06T16:26:05","slug":"shovelling-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2007\/02\/15\/shovelling-out\/","title":{"rendered":"shovelling out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Old years ago, the jaunty task<br \/>\nof cleaning out a driveway<br \/>\nafter it had filled with snow<br \/>\nwas frivolous stuff: a way<br \/>\nof showing off for girls<br \/>\nhow easily he sectioned<br \/>\nout each cube of snow<br \/>\nand hurled the hefty chunks<br \/>\nlike giant swaths of mountains<br \/>\nat furious start of planet earth.<\/p>\n<p>Now hard-packed snow<br \/>\nthe dreaded <a href=\"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/11\/25\/aniu\/\" title=\"the poem aniu, based on the list of eleven Inuit words for snow\" target=\"_blank\">aniu<\/a><br \/>\nwaited out the window:<br \/>\na kilo cubic feet<br \/>\npacked hard<br \/>\nby last night&#8217;s winds;<br \/>\narthritis stood like a wall<br \/>\nbuttressed by heart arhythmia<br \/>\nand  lassitude of the golden years<br \/>\nbetween him and<br \/>\nshowing off for anyone.<\/p>\n<p>He donned longjohns<br \/>\nand heavy socks and<br \/>\npants and  flannel shirt<br \/>\nand scarf and windbreaker<br \/>\nand jaunty toque<br \/>\nand heavy mitts<br \/>\nand winter boots<br \/>\nand went outside to face<br \/>\na thousand cubic feet:<br \/>\nit might as well be<br \/>\ndestiny he thought<br \/>\nfor this old man<br \/>\neach time he had to go.<br \/>\nIt was expected.<br \/>\nHe expected such.<\/p>\n<p>So slow so steadily<br \/>\nmethodical like tamping<br \/>\nsweet tobacco in a pipe<br \/>\nin mid sentence to a child<br \/>\nor skinning rabbits<br \/>\ncleaning perch with grandchildren<br \/>\nupon the dock in draining sun<br \/>\nin sweetly drawing August.<\/p>\n<p>He pictured steaming chocolate<br \/>\nin a mug inside the cosy kitchen<br \/>\nsoothing the hard ache<br \/>\nthat carved a hole inside his chest<br \/>\nan empty spot just right<br \/>\nto fill with rich warm chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>The wind blew saltic chaff<br \/>\nin streams across the piles<br \/>\nof chunks of anui<br \/>\nthat grew a field for forts<br \/>\nfor kids to play in<br \/>\ncarving cosy red-cheeked<br \/>\ndrip-nose fun for days.<\/p>\n<p>Hard breath hissed out<br \/>\nlike steam from some old<br \/>\nengine on a track<br \/>\nhauling freight for the<br \/>\nthousandth time up<br \/>\nhard-earned mountain passes<br \/>\nin the fabled west.<\/p>\n<p>When he had to lean upon<br \/>\nthe shovel and catch up his breath,<br \/>\nthis was an unaccustomed place<br \/>\nto wait until the pain drained out:<br \/>\nbut body&#8217;s limits impose such toll<br \/>\non such as this old tilter of windmills<br \/>\nwho would remember viscerally<br \/>\nin joint and lungs and back<br \/>\nand arms and every cran and place<br \/>\nthat tortured flesh can find to list:<br \/>\na handful of days, a week,<br \/>\nregretting the future<br \/>\nuntil finally the driveway cleared<br \/>\nthe walkway, steps passable again<br \/>\nhe dragged his sorry ass inside<br \/>\nto face the soft ministrations<br \/>\nof tender loving hands<br \/>\nand warm chocolate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old years ago, the jaunty task of cleaning out a driveway after it had filled with snow was frivolous stuff: a way of showing off for girls how easily he sectioned out each cube of snow and hurled the hefty &hellip;
