{"id":475,"date":"2007-02-09T18:10:57","date_gmt":"2007-02-09T23:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2007\/02\/09\/fish-fry\/"},"modified":"2007-02-09T18:10:57","modified_gmt":"2007-02-09T23:10:57","slug":"fish-fry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2007\/02\/09\/fish-fry\/","title":{"rendered":"fish fry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m sure I could count my age on<br \/>\nthe fingers of one hand:<br \/>\nour landlord&#8217;s son, a fighter pilot<br \/>\nhome on furlough, and a buddy<br \/>\ntook my young sister and me<br \/>\nout of town to spend a weekend<br \/>\nat his family cottage<br \/>\nwhich crouched on high rocks<br \/>\nover a deep dark lake.<\/p>\n<p>My mother may have been there;<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t recall \u2014 probably she was,<br \/>\nbut I can&#8217;t picture her there.<br \/>\nI remember going out fishing in<br \/>\nthe cedarstrip motorboat,<br \/>\nand I remember the overpowering<br \/>\nsmell of gasoline and naptha lanterns<br \/>\nand kerosene and flytox sprays.<br \/>\nWe caught two large pickerel<br \/>\nwhich he fried for breakfast<br \/>\n&#151; I had never had fish<br \/>\nfor breakfast before.<br \/>\nHe dipped them in batter<br \/>\nand fried them in a black iron skillet.<\/p>\n<p>Those were the main fish against which<br \/>\nall fish meals compare.
