It arrived just in time for lunch \u2014
\nsliced cold turkey on whole wheat
\nwith Dijon mustard, cheddar cheese,
\nolives, pickled pearl onions, capers
\nand tea \u2014 an immense white vehicle
\nthat descended sillently from the blue sky.<\/p>\n
I would have asked them in, but they
\ndid not seem interested in food; rather
\nthey spent most of the lunch period
\nsetting up some device in my front yard.
\nIt turned out to be a universal translator
\nthey poked it through the window and
\nasked me thousands of questionsthat
\nI refused to answer, as they were
\nvery personal, and I have a right to some
\nprivacy \u2014 what they were I won’t say.<\/p>\n
They left just before supper which I prepared
\nduring the most intense period of questioning,
\nwhen they were asking about disease and war
\nand many unpleasant things I refuse to consider.
\nI was quite pleased when they got into their ship
\nand silently returned straight up. Supper was
\na fried pork chop with apple sauce, candied baby
\ncarrots, poached beets, baked potato with sour cream,
\nand a sweet tart for dessert.<\/p>\n
