big calloused hands
\nwork this plot of earth
\nwinding the heavy wheels
\nof cart and wagon
\nladen with boulder and root
\nthen wood and steel
\nand seed then green
\nwith wit and will

the ruddy stink of it
\nis sweet and hard earned
\nwhere knowledge of loam
\nand insect and oxen
\nin the fertile frenzy

if this year’s loam

\nwe are winning
\nthe magnificence
