Such were<br \/>\nthe shallow fifties: young men in tweed jackets, neckties,<br \/>\nwho would swallow every half-washed lie or agitprop<br \/>\nspread by politicians magically who knew better than<br \/>\nwe how to twist and prettify the world they made.<\/p>\n<p>What goons what loons what silly tune-believing rubes jejune!<br \/>\nThe question is, of course, whether those salterranean beasties<br \/>\nfrom Trinity were wiser for their irreverence or just as silly as we.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to think they made their way prudently, cynically, in the wide world,<br \/>\nfree of our narrow-eyed tunnel vision, able to tell a hawk from a handsaw.<br \/>\nOne could do a lot worse than be salt, pillar or no.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;We are the salt of the earth! &#151; Sal terrae!
