{"id":387,"date":"2006-11-27T07:49:34","date_gmt":"2006-11-27T12:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/11\/27\/natigvik\/"},"modified":"2006-11-27T07:49:34","modified_gmt":"2006-11-27T12:49:34","slug":"natigvik","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/11\/27\/natigvik\/","title":{"rendered":"natigvik"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>[natigvik: Inuit for snowdrift]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I was a kid of fifteen<br \/>\nI was a downhill skiing fanatic:<br \/>\nI competed in races and skied<br \/>\nevery chance I got.<\/p>\n<p>On weekends<br \/>\nthat included taking the bus<br \/>\nout to the big ski hill<br \/>\nand skiing across the lake<br \/>\nand into the bush to the ski tow.<\/p>\n<p>After the day was over<br \/>\nI would ski out<br \/>\nand wait alone for the bus<br \/>\nat the side of the wide lake<br \/>\nwith my skis and my packsack.<\/p>\n<p>This day, I remember,<br \/>\nI arrived at the bus stop<br \/>\nin time to see the bus<br \/>\nchugging up the hill<br \/>\naway from me.<br \/>\nA storm was blowing up,<br \/>\nit was getting dark<br \/>\nand I had to wait<br \/>\nan hour for the next bus.<\/p>\n<p>I could either freeze to death<br \/>\nin the open wind<br \/>\nthat swept across the lake<br \/>\nor take action.<br \/>\nI had no choice:<br \/>\nI burrowed into<br \/>\nthe huge snowdrift<br \/>\nout of the wind<br \/>\nand contemplated<br \/>\nmy wonderful day<br \/>\nwhile I waited out the storm<br \/>\nsecure and comfortable<br \/>\nin natigvik.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[natigvik: Inuit for snowdrift] When I was a kid of fifteen I was a downhill skiing fanatic: I competed in races and skied every chance I got.
