Each time,
\nthey face each other
\nabout as far apart as if
\nI were lying on a mortuary slab
\nand one were at my head,
\nand the other at my feet.<\/p>\n

They are on the floor:
\nKatisha under the couch
\nCountess in the cat carrier,
\nnegotiating with a series of
\ngrowls and heartfelt cries
\nthat show no softening.<\/p>\n

We gentrify the event
\nwith irresistible kitty treats;
\nif we had fresh mouse parts
\nwe would pre-chew those too.
\nWe speak softly, even sweetly:
\nGood kitty: you could be friends<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The African violets
\non the table nearby
\npale slightly, pause:
\nnothing changes.
\nAs for me, I could use
