Quandry<\/p>\n<p>We go over there in the rain:<br \/>\nthey hug us smiling at the door<br \/>\nand we enter handing over the wine<br \/>\nand it hits us:<br \/>\nsmell of burning brass brake linings<br \/>\nor something caustic and carbonized.<\/p>\n<p>2. Paradox<\/p>\n<p>Their house is beautiful:<br \/>\npastels and art and good taste<br \/>\nand wonderful food<br \/>\nthat we can hardly taste:<br \/>\ntaste is mainly nasal; we smell food<br \/>\nwhich here competes with burned tar.<br \/>\nHe ducks into the kitchen for a smoke.<\/p>\n<p>3. Relief<\/p>\n<p>I duck out briefly for a gasp of<br \/>\nfresh air: it is raining, cool;<br \/>\nI huddle against the outside near the door<br \/>\nfurtive, like a smoker taking a drag<br \/>\nof rejuvenating air.<\/p>\n<p>4. Competition<\/p>\n<p>Inside again, I note the fireplace<br \/>\nis burning merrily gnoshing on oxygen<br \/>\nthat I would dearly like to breathe;<br \/>\nWindows are sealed against the weather<br \/>\nI am soon dizzy again.<\/p>\n<p>5. Observations<\/p>\n<p>They both sound hoarse<br \/>\nhave little catchy coughs<br \/>\nwithered skin, sallow eyes<br \/>\ndisappear into another room<br \/>\nat least once per hour.<\/p>\n<p>6. Conversation<\/p>\n<p>That night, we both toss in bed<br \/>\nwired by the alien chemicals<br \/>\nin our lungs and bloodstream<br \/>\nfighting for supremacy against<br \/>\nhypochondria and incipient<br \/>\nlung cancer.<br \/>\nAnd see their pouchy eyes.<\/p>\n<p>1.
