{"id":343,"date":"2006-10-18T15:26:55","date_gmt":"2006-10-18T19:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/10\/18\/four-percent\/"},"modified":"2006-10-18T15:26:55","modified_gmt":"2006-10-18T19:26:55","slug":"four-percent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/10\/18\/four-percent\/","title":{"rendered":"Four percent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I am driving home from the event<br \/>\nhis words haunt every twitch in traffic:<br \/>\n<em>On your way home, remember this:<br \/>\nfor every hundred vehicles on the road there are<br \/>\n<strong>four drivers who don&#8217;t care if they kill you<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are the psychopaths,<br \/>\nthe emotionless ones<br \/>\nour race has needed to survive<br \/>\nwho can kill without conscience:<br \/>\nwe need them to defend us<br \/>\nas long as they don&#8217;t kill us.<\/p>\n<p>I was reading about the kid (now nineteen<br \/>\nbut still unnamed because he was a juvenile<br \/>\nwhen, for a thrill,\u00a0 he and an adult buddy<br \/>\nkilled two just-retired teachers<br \/>\nat their summer cottage.)<br \/>\nHe recently escaped for a few days,<br \/>\nwas captured without incident,<br \/>\ncool as an ice pick or a shotgun in a drawer,<br \/>\nbut they thought he was reforming in jail.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t they read the literature?<br \/>\nLaws don&#8217;t stop psychopaths;<br \/>\nthey just let us deal with them.<\/p>\n<p>So, we need psychopaths,<br \/>\nbut when they step out of line,<br \/>\nwe can&#8217;t expect them to<br \/>\nreact like the rest of humanity<br \/>\nand worry about it.<br \/>\nThey can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I am driving home from the event his words haunt every twitch in traffic: On your way home, remember this: for every hundred vehicles on the road there are four drivers who don&#8217;t care if they kill you.
