{"id":332,"date":"2006-10-10T14:56:13","date_gmt":"2006-10-10T18:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/10\/10\/the-wash\/"},"modified":"2006-10-10T14:56:13","modified_gmt":"2006-10-10T18:56:13","slug":"the-wash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/10\/10\/the-wash\/","title":{"rendered":"The Wash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>[I didn&#8217;t have time to write a haiku, so I wrote this.]<\/em><br \/>\nOutside, signs instruct me:<em><br \/>\n&#8220;Not responsible for damage to<br \/>\nbug deflectors or other plastic.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I picture some kind of zany rodeo:<br \/>\nbucking cars and shards of plastic<br \/>\neventually of interest to archaeologists.<br \/>\nThrough the slot under<br \/>\nthe partially raised door<br \/>\nI see runners and jean cuffs<br \/>\nshuffling back and forth<br \/>\non a wet concrete floor.<br \/>\nStrong variegated hissing<br \/>\nemanates: a huge snake<br \/>\non a long smoke break.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;If you feel uncomfortable<br \/>\nmaking the entry turn<br \/>\nan attendant will be happy \u2014&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em>How happy I wonder.<br \/>\nWill he use signal flags<br \/>\nto land me on the carrier deck?<br \/>\nor just shoulder me aside,<br \/>\nvault insultingly into the saddle<br \/>\nand drive in cavalierly?<\/p>\n<p>The door rises; the show begins:<br \/>\nthe car ahead enters,<br \/>\nallowing me to negotiate the entry turn<br \/>\nand see the line of four vehicles,<br \/>\nvarious kid\/staff in charge<br \/>\nstanding, talking while<br \/>\nthe vehicles move ahead;<br \/>\neverything is wet:<br \/>\nthe floor gleams kaleidescope<br \/>\nhorizontal shimmers.<br \/>\nThe van at the head exits;<br \/>\neverything lurches forward.<\/p>\n<p>I find myself sitting near<br \/>\nthe exit door, writing this.<\/p>\n<p>The roar and music of<br \/>\ncar sanitation and shining:<br \/>\n&#8220;Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds&#8221;<br \/>\ntakes me with Dorothy<br \/>\nto the Wash and Brushup.<\/p>\n<p>My black Honda with its diet<br \/>\nof muddy roads and trailer hauling<br \/>\nis getting a new dress for visitors.<br \/>\nI wait for Cinderella to emerge<br \/>\nfrom the dancing minstrations of<br \/>\nfaeries, the boys of The Wash:<br \/>\nlow slung baggy pants<br \/>\nwet runners \u2014 the uniform.<\/p>\n<p>A roar like<br \/>\na jet revving for takeoff:<br \/>\nanother car is coming through;<br \/>\nmine is still stuck at the gate,<br \/>\ntoo grubby for quick treatment.<\/p>\n<p>When I gave the order for<br \/>\n&#8220;Inside, out, and wax,<br \/>\nclean driver&#8217;s door,&#8221;<br \/>\nthe guy give me a &#8220;No problem,&#8221;<br \/>\nand perhaps a little promotion,<br \/>\nlike the waiter who leads you to believe<br \/>\nyour selection from the menu<br \/>\nis inspired; then he smiles and<br \/>\nhops to another exciting challenge.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t do it:<br \/>\npretend car washing was<br \/>\na great  career choice.<br \/>\nI couldn&#8217;t give cleaning windows<br \/>\nand dashboards a career commitment.<br \/>\nGoing to that job would not make me<br \/>\nget up every day, but they do<br \/>\n\u2014 and there&#8217;s a kind of sainthood in that.<\/p>\n<p>They must have some joy here:<br \/>\nWhat is it? cameraderie? love of cars?<br \/>\nsecurity, a wage? tips? community?<br \/>\nperforming in front of an audience?<\/p>\n<p>Air fresheners offered:<em><br \/>\n&#8220;new car, lemon, green apple,<br \/>\ncherry, tropical, strawberry, pina colada.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nI notice &#8220;cinnamon&#8221; is<br \/>\ntaped over with masking tape.<br \/>\nWhat if I get pulled over and<br \/>\n<em>Pina colada<\/em> reeks out at the constable?<br \/>\nI pass on the sir freshener.<\/p>\n<p>My Honda is prepping for<br \/>\njet takeoff mode.
