Sat for an hour today
\nmaking notes about the surrounding guys\u2014
\nall waiting for our new tires.<\/p>\n
Some sat, some paced outside;
\ntwo knew each other
\nconversed in French\u2014
\na lot of hand waving,
\nand I wondered
\nhow often we hear people
\nspeak an unknown tongue
\nas if they were
\nin another dimension.<\/p>\n
I recalled being at a party
\neveryone spoke Lithuanian
\nexcept me. It came to a head
\nwhen someone told a hilarious joke
\nto the whole crowd except me.
\nEveryone was laughing
\n(well, I smiled)
\nand then stopped.<\/p>\n
I have remembered that moment
\nperfectly for fifty-four years.<\/p>\n
The day I killed a joke.<\/p>\n
I wished I could talk to those two guys.<\/p>\n
But I wasn\u2019t talking to any
