Millers and shads whirl about
\nin the agora on the other side
\nof the window
\n\u2014 out in the night, trying
\nto come through to the light
\nabove me and recline here
\non the windowseat, writing.<\/p>\n
Some bounce on and off the glass;
\nothers stagger, wander in curves
\nmore frantic close to the light.
\nI look out into the dark,
\nseeing them, but past them,
\nin phantom seeing myself
\nregarding me. And that
\nself exists only in light;
\nin shadow there is nothing.<\/p>\n
As a pastel on black
\nI exist only as light
\ndabs and smears of pink
\nand grey viewed through
\na medium of staggering
\nfrantic millers and shads
\nmore real than I.<\/p>\n
Later, the light will extinguish;
\nthey will calm and probably
\ndepart. With dawn, I shall
\nPush anxiously against
