Lingering too late over the words \u2014
\nincantations scratched onto these pages,
\nrubrics drawn from
\nthe topography of my shifting brain \u2014
\nresisting the allure of veering off
\ninto microsleep in the flames
\nof whatever whore of a dream
\nwants to entertain me \u2014
\nI am reluctant to leave the fading
\ndopplering echoes of our family departed
\nto crouch in sleep,
\ncoiled in my impervious shell.
\nI want to linger here
\nat the pixellating edges a little
\nwhere there is at least a chance
\nto relish one last tiny echo of
\na laugh perhaps, caught, held by
\nimmutable scientific law,
\nthen relinquished by these fabrics,
\nthreads running like mapped roadways
\nin the multicoloured couches
\nwhere we all sat
\nfeasting on each others’ wits
\nfor a few warm weeks
