{"id":2951,"date":"2010-01-21T20:26:18","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T01:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2951"},"modified":"2010-01-21T20:26:18","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T01:26:18","slug":"podcasting-poetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2010\/01\/21\/podcasting-poetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcasting poetry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I spent three hours today setting up<br \/>\nmy recorder so that I could make MP3s of<br \/>\na new series of poems, and thereby<br \/>\nturn up the thermostat in wordcurrents<br \/>\nenough to shake up the various<br \/>\nhibernating fauna that live here<br \/>\nin this garden of earthly delight.<\/p>\n<p>It took forever to start because<br \/>\nthe first six test runs of &#8220;anatomy&#8221;<br \/>\nsounded as if I was reading it<br \/>\nthrough a long hose while<br \/>\nsipping something interesting.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;something interesting&#8221;<br \/>\ndidn&#8217;t bother me, but the long hose<br \/>\nset me to a frenzy of settings adjustments,<br \/>\nexperimentation, and trying to figure out<br \/>\nhow I fixed it last time. I seem to do that<br \/>\na lot: forgetting how I did something before.<br \/>\nThis time, I fixed a whole new way that makes<br \/>\nme sound as if I were reading through<br \/>\na clown&#8217;s underwear.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the nuances, you see: it&#8217;s something<br \/>\nwe poets go after a lot, salting in the nuances<br \/>\nand trying to shade the text with HB crosshatching<br \/>\nto give it innuendo and subtlety, possibly irony and<br \/>\nchocolate sauce that I should have been able to imply<br \/>\nin the text, without hitting the reader on the head.<\/p>\n<p>So now I&#8217;m reading the text<br \/>\ninto a microphone. It is not just my<br \/>\ndumb voice, but also my pauses,<br \/>\ninflections, breathing\u2014 turning up<br \/>\nthe thermostat, even if this is the winter solstice\u2014<br \/>\nit&#8217;s enough to make a snail overheat.<br \/>\nBut it&#8217;s still fun, or I wouldn&#8217;t do it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am adding new podcasts to wordcurrents, but I have forgotten how to resolve some of the technical issues.
