{"id":2856,"date":"2010-01-03T20:51:27","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T01:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2856"},"modified":"2010-01-21T19:43:37","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T00:43:37","slug":"the-drive-to-the-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2010\/01\/03\/the-drive-to-the-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"The drive to the beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These white days in the heart of winter<br \/>\nthe heat that sustains me is in the warm<br \/>\ngrass that cradles my bare feet in<br \/>\nsummers past and yet to come.<\/p>\n<p>I think of hopping into the car, not bundled<br \/>\nwithin layers of warm fabric against the cold,<br \/>\nbut hanging loose in shorts and tee.<br \/>\nIn the trunk are the makings of a picnic.<\/p>\n<p>On the way, <!--more-->we all know there is a stop<br \/>\nat the little gas station where they sell<br \/>\nfresh curds after eleven on Tuesdays<br \/>\nand Fridays. Bags of them on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>They entwine intimately in sealed bags, pale<br \/>\nsquared finger length strips, almost cool<br \/>\nin traces of their slightly salty whey.<br \/>\nWe buy two bags: one for the trip,<\/p>\n<p>one for the beach. Rip open the bag and<br \/>\npass it around. Squeaky sighs of contentment<br \/>\nas each of us chews into the buttery,<br \/>\nslightly salty and yes squeaky wondrous food.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I think of poutine: hot gravy over<br \/>\ncurds and french fries, and my mouth waters.<br \/>\nBut mostly, I think of a bag of curds and a<br \/>\npitcher of draft beer, bare feet and sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>[podcast]http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/podcast\/MONO-way-to-beach.mp3[\/podcast]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>K&#8217;ay suggested I write a poem about curds.
