{"id":28,"date":"2006-03-01T12:13:46","date_gmt":"2006-03-01T17:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=28"},"modified":"2008-05-27T09:01:39","modified_gmt":"2008-05-27T13:01:39","slug":"sonnet-song-%e2%80%94-in-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/03\/01\/sonnet-song-%e2%80%94-in-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Sonnet Song \u2014 in progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>This is a work in progress, a to-be-tinkered-with revision of \u201cSonnet Song\u201d<\/em> \u2014 <em>yesterday\u2019s post.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are strange things done in the service of writing a sonnet;<br \/>\nFor example, the modern idiom doesn\u2019t quite fit:<br \/>\nMakes you think a pedantic were solemnly working upon it;<br \/>\nFor the rhetoric, diction and syntax are trying my wit.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the stanza that just won\u2019t behave itself properly;<br \/>\nYou\u2019d think it was Gilbert and Sullivan recitative.<br \/>\nI try to take charge and rein in this cantankerous property;<br \/>\nBut nothing I try can stop melting my cool by degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Certain fans of free verse will just turn up their noses at scansion:<br \/>\nAnd rhyming will alienate them and completely bewilder;<br \/>\nBut there is a place for the style of the rhymers and rappers<br \/>\nSuccinct rhyme and rhythm are earning them plenty of silver.<\/p>\n<p>Before you say a sonnet\u2019s only crap,<br \/>\nJust listen to the  brothers doing rap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a work in progress, a to-be-tinkered-with revision of \u201cSonnet Song\u201d \u2014 yesterday\u2019s post.
