December: the day was gray

\nlike the wet belly
\nof an old gray horse
\nviewed from the mud
\nwhen you’ve just been bucked off.
\nThat takes into account
\nthe vagueness and the feeling
\nthat something else is coming
\nlike a kick to the head.
\nSo I’m standing by the window
\nkind of soggy from walking
\nall that way in the rain.
\nSuddenly is such a clich\u00e9
\nthat I’ll say I discovered abruptly
\nthat there were trees in the scene
\nwhen they all turned bright yellow
\nas if the old wet horse skittered away.
