On this rare, soft November day,
\nthe air is brilliant yellow, flooded
\nwarm by the sun. Ochre, red,
\nyellow and dun leaves lie scattered
\non the intensely green lawn,
\ntinted gold by sun, blue by shade.
\nWe rake them into large piles and
\nstuff clumps of them into huge
\ncrackly brown paper bags that
\nwe stack in rows. Later, drawn
\nby the day, we drive along the
\nsparkling blue river to the orchard
\non the hillside, for a cool jug of
\nsweet red cider and a bag of
