{"id":2332,"date":"2009-10-24T23:22:31","date_gmt":"2009-10-25T03:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2332"},"modified":"2009-10-25T23:26:44","modified_gmt":"2009-10-26T03:26:44","slug":"tapping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/10\/24\/tapping\/","title":{"rendered":"tapping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The small gray car pulled into the slot opposite mine,<br \/>\na tall, well-coiffed blonde woman emerged from the driver&#8217;s side,<br \/>\nheaded for the wool store in front of her car, stopped,<br \/>\nreturned to the passenger side, and spoke briefly through<br \/>\nthe slot provided by a partially lowered window, shook her head,<br \/>\nand crossed to the store door and disappeared inside.<br \/>\nAlmost immediately, slender fingers emerged through the slot<br \/>\nholding a newly lit cigarette, which they tapped rapidly,<br \/>\nthen withdrew. The hand emerged, <!--more-->sometimes almost to the wrist,<br \/>\nsometimes just the cigarette and the tips of the fingers,<br \/>\ntoo frequently for utility, enough to make me think there must be<br \/>\nsome agitation, some compulsion behind the constant tapping.<br \/>\nThis fingers where female, by their shape and the nail polish,<br \/>\nand made me wonder if she was a friend of the driver, a sister,<br \/>\nlover, or even someone ill or disabled, whom the driver was helping out.<br \/>\nThe fact that she was tapping the ashes outside the car<br \/>\nsuggested the driver was a non-smoker, perhaps would not approve,<br \/>\nwould reprimand her when she returned with her purchase.<br \/>\nI pictured her knee twitching spasmodically; I sensed her sighing,<br \/>\nwondering what she would do next, how she would survive.<br \/>\nI am glad I don&#8217;t need to tap a cigarette to pass each dread moment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was sitting in a parking lot when I saw this, this afternoon.
