City street after rain.<br \/>\nEarly autumn leaves cling to the pavement<br \/>\nlike wet hair on a waiting face.<br \/>\nAmber and blue incandescence<br \/>\nlies in pools for walking entrances,<br \/>\nperformances and exits,<br \/>\nas the occasional soloist mimes<br \/>\nman walking alone on the street <!--more-->at night,<br \/>\nor woman hurrying home, face averted.<br \/>\nEach passage punctuates with a semicolon:<br \/>\nmore of the same to come.<\/p>\n<p>Streetlamps hollow out faces, obscure<br \/>\nintent: anything could inhabit each mask;<br \/>\nany act could ignite each pool of light,<br \/>\nriver of dark. Nobody expects the<br \/>\npainful imposition of words out of the dark:<br \/>\n<em>Excuse me, but could you<\/em>\u2014<br \/>\nis enough to encourage shivering,<br \/>\ncrossing the street briskly. And it&#8217;s all right:<br \/>\ndarkness anonymizes.
