{"id":2297,"date":"2009-10-19T13:33:38","date_gmt":"2009-10-19T17:33:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2297"},"modified":"2009-10-20T19:02:24","modified_gmt":"2009-10-20T23:02:24","slug":"vacant-lot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/10\/19\/vacant-lot\/","title":{"rendered":"vacant lot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The bed of earth and gravel<br \/>\nresembles a giant grave<br \/>\nsurrounded by two asphalt driveways<br \/>\nand the parking lot at back,<br \/>\nslopes upward away from the<br \/>\nbusy street and concrete sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>It is long and narrow.<br \/>\nI almost expect to see a headstone.<!--more--><br \/>\nThere is nothing buried here;<br \/>\nthe long clawed arm removed all<br \/>\nas a primitive dentist extracts a tooth.<\/p>\n<p>The brick house, lately <em>The Java House<\/em>,<br \/>\nseems reluctant to<br \/>\ngive up seventy years of situation,<br \/>\nbut sits like a ghostly grandmother<br \/>\nhaunting the plot at night.<\/p>\n<p>So much is gone: so many vacant lots,<br \/>\nso much impermanence remains.<br \/>\nThe past is lost has gone is dead.<br \/>\nThe only regret seems to be held<br \/>\nin the ghosts of scattered bricks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another building falls to demolition.
