The part I sing in our quartet
\nhovers above or below the melody;
\noften it sounds like the French horn.
\nThe Lead’s note sounds familiar;
\nthe Bass is the solid foundation;
\nthe Tenor lilts above all, thrillingly;
\nmy part, the Bari, fills it all in.<\/p>\n
I make it work, and doing that,
\nI hear the games the arranger plays,
\nas no one else can: resonating in me
\nis the edge of the music, the place
\nit is most sweet and sour, most
\nripe and raw. The music is a house
\nwith furnace roaring in the basement,
\ntwittering birds nesting in the attic,
\ngood cooking in the kitchen, and a ghost
\nnudging everyone along the spine.<\/p>\n
If you doubt that I am a ghost,
\nlisten to the Bari part by itself
\nif you dare, alone by a window
\nas darkness surrounds the house;
\nand you realize how alone you are,
\nand how necessary that tingle
