{"id":2255,"date":"2009-10-14T23:41:18","date_gmt":"2009-10-15T03:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2255"},"modified":"2009-10-16T00:03:32","modified_gmt":"2009-10-16T04:03:32","slug":"brewski","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/10\/14\/brewski\/","title":{"rendered":"brewski"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We pull several of the small, steel-topped tables<br \/>\ntogether in a row, order our beers; and, while we<br \/>\nsit, making small talk, and waiting for the rest<br \/>\nof the guys to arrive, I wonder if we will sing.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the guys are new, so they won&#8217;t;<br \/>\nbut we do have all four parts already, so<br \/>\nwe could burst into song <!--more-->at any moment:<br \/>\n<em>My Wild Irish Rose\u2014<\/em>something simple.<\/p>\n<p>My beer, a tall glass of dark draft, is inviting:<br \/>\nbefore I sip, I feel like a kid about to open<br \/>\na candy bar at the summer camp canteen;<br \/>\nits foam head reminds me of malted milk.<\/p>\n<p>The new guys are quietly smiling: they are<br \/>\nwaiting for the regulars to lead the conversation;<br \/>\nthis shyness comes of entering what they see,<br \/>\nwith some degree of reverence, as a tradition.<\/p>\n<p>I remember being new at one of these After Glows:<br \/>\nI felt like a guy on a first date or a freshman<br \/>\nor a kid showing off his first bike, afraid of<br \/>\na skinned knee or some kind of false move.<\/p>\n<p>But the beer gives us what it could not give<br \/>\nthe kid: soon, we are all talking about our<br \/>\nobservations, experiences, like normal people.<br \/>\nThese new guys are all right.
