{"id":2205,"date":"2009-10-10T23:44:48","date_gmt":"2009-10-11T03:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2205"},"modified":"2009-10-11T23:32:42","modified_gmt":"2009-10-12T03:32:42","slug":"inevitable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/10\/10\/inevitable\/","title":{"rendered":"inevitable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wish I could use<br \/>\na mountain-climbing image:<br \/>\nit would describe the feeling<br \/>\nall hanging by my fingernails<br \/>\nover a gaping inevitability.<\/p>\n<p>But I have never climbed a mountain<br \/>\nof any consequence; any attempt<br \/>\nto use a mountain-climbing image<br \/>\nwould fall short, just as I <!--more-->would<br \/>\nfall long had I tried to climb a mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I have to depend on water<br \/>\nflowing by in the river &#8212; that&#8217;s something<br \/>\nI do have in my poetic arsenal; I have<br \/>\nplenty of river experience.<\/p>\n<p>Today, a group of us stood by the river<br \/>\nto commemorate the end of another summer.<br \/>\nThe water was dark and rough, kind of<br \/>\nlike the summer; yet there were times that the sun<br \/>\netched the water in silver and deepest sapphire.<br \/>\nThere were times the sky was heart-aching,<br \/>\nsoul-kissing blue, and the trees impossible<br \/>\nreds, yellows, ochres &#8212; more than flames,<br \/>\nmore than leaves, more than matter.<\/p>\n<p>And so, I sit here in town, watching the water<br \/>\nflow by in memory. And I can see in the water<br \/>\na lifetime of summers that have flowed by<br \/>\nas summers will flow by, inhabited by children<br \/>\nwho drift by again and again, a little older each time,<br \/>\na little wiser, each leaving a brief indentation<br \/>\nin the surface of the river that flows on<br \/>\ntowards the city in the heart-aching,<br \/>\nsoul-kissing blue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Closing the cottage can be inspirational and surprising.
