\nBecause there’s no air.
\nIt’s air that keeps us stuck to the earth.”
\n\u2014 seriously, my university roommate, a science major . . .

Night on the river
\nAway from the lights \u2014
\nSit in a gently rocking boat
\nDrift with the current
\nHear singers at a bonfire
\nJust a faraway spark of sound \u2014<\/p>\n

Ripples play with the sides of the boat
\nOut there, over by the weedbeds,
\nA large pike lofts after the moon<\/a>
\nBut splats back heavily into the glassy water.<\/p>\n

Up I look at the stars
\nInexplicable bright sparks
\nShining enigmatically
\nEyes looking back
\nSearching for me
\nOn the dark river
\nIn my little boat.<\/p>\n

If I could hold my breath
\nI could drift up
\nGo there;
\nIt’s breath holds me here
\nThe act of breathing
\nAcknowledging the air
\nThat binds me here.
\nI could walk on the moon
\nSpread stars like moondust
\nLook back at you
\nSee you
\nFind you
