In the VIP Lounge of our Civic Complex
\non Tuesday afternoons, we retired folk
\ncongregate at the call of the Director
\nto play Duplicate Bridge.<\/p>\n
My partner and I usually do quite well;
\nwe are often in the top three, sometimes
\nfirst. In fact, two weeks ago we were
\nTop Over All\u2014nothing to sneeze at.<\/p>\n
This report is not bragging\u2014certainly not;
\nit is more like self-mutilation: the last
\ntwo weeks have seen us take part
\nin what can only be described as<\/p>\n
an exercise in humility.<\/p>\n
I have failed to return my partner’s suit
\nwhen she had the ace; she has put me
\ninto seven spades when we were missing
\nthree aces. The explanation is simple:<\/p>\n
we need a good laugh.<\/p>\n
And we are certainly getting it:
\nif points are given for giggling, chuckling,
\nand laughing out loud, we came first
\nfor that this afternoon, in spite of the score.<\/p>\n
