{"id":2094,"date":"2009-09-26T19:43:06","date_gmt":"2009-09-26T23:43:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=2094"},"modified":"2009-09-27T23:33:22","modified_gmt":"2009-09-28T03:33:22","slug":"at-the-next-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/09\/26\/at-the-next-table\/","title":{"rendered":"At the next table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I was sipping my hot chocolate,<br \/>\nwaiting, idly noting the arrivals and departures,<br \/>\npretty well ignoring the four teenage girls<br \/>\ngabbing, giggling, at the next table,<br \/>\nwhen the whole chemistry of the place changed:<\/p>\n<p>a good-looking young guy sauntered in,<!--more--><br \/>\ngave one of the girls a quick wave,<br \/>\nstepped up to the counter to give his order.<br \/>\nHe glanced quickly around the room,<br \/>\ngave a girl at the table a quick grin.<\/p>\n<p>The air seemed to return to the table beside me<br \/>\nas the girls started chattering, not asking.<br \/>\nHe approached the table, all skinny sixteen<br \/>\nyears of casual sociability, debonairly clutching<br \/>\nhis coffee. He  had worn a wet bathing suit all day<\/p>\n<p>he said. It stank he said because he had thrown it<br \/>\ninto a heap with his towel and left it in his locker<br \/>\nfor a couple of days, so he was uncomfortable wearing it<br \/>\nbecause it was cold, but not see-through like a girl&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>It was here that I tuned out, overloaded.<br \/>\nI tried to picture myself in that situation<br \/>\nat that age. I couldn&#8217;t see myself with<br \/>\nenough confidence to address a full table of girls<br \/>\nat that age, nor would I have talked about my<br \/>\nstinky crotch, nor would girls have worn<br \/>\nbathing suits that went transparent when wet.<\/p>\n<p>When I was a kid, sex was too scary to talk about<br \/>\nexcept with other boys. Bathed in that fount<br \/>\nof misinformation, we kept our distance except<br \/>\nin simple one-on-one disarming combat.<br \/>\nAnd, sadly, transparent bathing suits had neither<br \/>\nbeen invented nor worn. But that was then<br \/>\nand this was at the next table.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kids today are truly different from kids a half century ago when it comes to sex.
