She used to purr when she leaped onto the bed;

\nI could read her expressions through the fur:
\nglad to see me (and usually was):
\nrelaxed eyelids, fur sleek off the face;
\nimpatient with my stupidity:
\nstaring at me, legs rigidly apart, lips wide;
\nangry that I forgot she was outside:
\nplenty of carping criticism at me as she walks by;
\nTime for sleep:
\nlots of purring, rolled over against me.<\/p>\n
She says none of that now,
\ntakes her well-earned rest
\nin that little grave near the cottage
\non the island where she found us:
